Your first UX job is waiting for you......and it’s closer than you think
In 2016, my good friend Jake Dibattista (now a Senior UX Strategist at Sam’s Club and started his own Digital University) and I made our first symbolic UX dollar by identifying a problem to solve in our environment. We both competed as Division I track and field athletes, and one of the major issues we encountered was the lack of access to results after competition. We found one of the many timing services in our area and contacted them with a UX proposal that could improve their bottom line.
The next thing we knew, we were at an athletic competition conducting user research with spectators, parents, and athletes on how we could improve access to meet results.
We had no “UX experience”
We had no formal “UX education”
We did a lot of desk research and YouTube university
We were humble enough to learn while on the job
Let’s think though this
User Experience is a problem solving toolset for the digital world and the new economy
Every business in the world has a problem that User Experience can solve
As an aspiring UX professional or current UX professional, you have the opportunity to help businesses attain their goals using your skillset
Non-popular Business sectors that need your help:
Family planning services
Education
Food services
Mental health services
Startups ( especially the one your friend just started, give them a call)
Faith services
Aging services
more…
We can go on forever. The point is, your first role is likely sitting right next to you. Don’t wait for popular tech companies to reach out to you for an interview.
The profession of User Experience is one of action. When you go out there and solve real-world problems, your CV/Resume builds itself, and your references become more authentic. Additionally, you build a tremendous amount of confidence in yourself and your skillset.
Best regards,
The RB Team
